Michter's Art of Hospitality Award 2022

Michters Art of Hospitality Award 2022

Set on the 64th floor of the iconic 1930s art deco building at 70 Pine Street, Overstory bears the hallmarks of the world’s finest bars. From the truly jaw-slackening views southeast across New York from the wraparound terrace, through its pared-back design and to its collection of complex and contemporary cocktails, the bar is quickly establishing itself as one of the finest in New York.

In the inaugural programme for North America’s 50 Best Bars, Overstory has been voted as the winner of the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award. The prize is voted for by the 220 members of the judging Academy, who are asked to name the one venue where they received the single-best hospitality experience across the 18-month voting period. It is a relatively new accolade, introduced in 2020 as 50 Best looks to reward those venues offering perfect hospitality as the bar world emerges from the pandemic and consumers look for the confidence to return to their favourite bars.

The service structure is orchestrated by beverage director Harrison Ginsberg, alum of one-time The World’s Best Bar, The Dead Rabbit. Ginsberg has devised a hospitality method that allows the view to speak for itself, with the décor and drinks themselves acting as understudies to the vista. The pastel shades and minimal bar design apply emphasis to the windows, and although all the tropes of modern mixology are present – centrifuges, fermentation, clarification and fat-washing – these are deliberately hidden from the guest both in terms of the menu content and out of sight in the back of house. Ginsberg encourages interaction between his team and the drinker, so that if they’re interested in learning how the drink came together, they can ask and be told.

The mantra for the team at Overstory is to be ‘noticeably appreciative’. It starts from the moment guests are personally guided from the elevator to one of the 28 seats, continues through an intuitive explanation of the menu and ends with them again being escorted back to exit point. Allcomers are encouraged to contact the team personally should they wish to come back to try more of the venue for a re-booking (which they inevitably do).

A bar which is aware of its strongest suits and allows them to hold centre stage, Overstory is well deserving of the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award and will no doubt to continue to hit its high expectations in the North America’s 50 Best Bars list in the years to come.
