North America’s 50 Best Bars is a new annual list that celebrates the best of the region’s drinks industry. Marking the first time since 2016 that 50 Best announced a new bars list and awards programme, the inaugural edition was unveiled on Tuesday, 7th June 2022 during an awards ceremony in New York. The list provides a ranking of the best bar experiences in the region as voted for by 220 drinks experts from Canada, USA, Mexico and the Caribbean.
The inaugural awards programme provided the unique opportunity to unite bartenders, bar owners, cocktail aficionados and drinks journalists in a celebration of the drinks, hospitality and talent of the North American bars sector. The launch marked a critical step in 50 Best’s continuous drive to put the spotlight on superb bar talent in specific regions, showcasing the subtlety and complexity of bar craft from around the world.
The awards ceremony comprised a live countdown of the list, culminating in the first-ever announcement of The Best Bar in North America, sponsored by Perrier, a highly coveted and much-anticipated accolade. The live awards ceremony on 7th June was preceded by several special award announcements, and a number of unique accolades for both individuals and establishments were also given out on the evening itself. The ceremony was broadcasted to a global audience through The World’s 50 Best Bars Facebook page and 50 Best Bars TV channel on YouTube.
North America’s 50 Best Bars is owned and organised by William Reed, which also publishes The World’s 50 Best Bars annually since 2009 and Asia’s 50 Best Bars since 2016. The brand portfolio also includes The World's 50 Best Restaurants, launched in 2002; Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants and Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, both launched in 2013; and Middle East & North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants, launched in 2021. William Reed is entirely responsible for the organisation of the awards, the voting system and the list.
In 2019, the organisation launched 50 Best Discovery, a platform comprising thousands of bars and restaurants across the globe that have all received votes from the voting Academy. Each venue is geo-tagged and comes with a bite-size review to give guests a taste of the experience on offer, as well as contact details, imagery and average price.
In 2020, 50 Best pivoted from publishing its annual ranking and hosting live events to focus on fund-raising and supporting the hospitality sector through its 50 Best for Recovery programme, which included raising $1.29m with the support of its partners, including Perrier. 50 Best for Recovery distributed grants to more than 200 bars and restaurants and donated to a series of non-profits organisations in the food and drink sector.
