Odeonsplatz 6+7, Munich
LOST IN MUNICH? Then hail a cab and come here. Charles Schumann’s elegant American Bar offers a refreshing and refined antidote to Munich’s stein-swaying, lederhosen-slapping, sausage-munching Bavarian beer halls.
A former male model, author of several cocktail tomes and designer of bespoke barware, Schumann is a seriously stylish individual whose appreciation of design and drinks is deftly dovetailed at his eponymous cocktail bar which opened more than 25 years ago in a different Munich location.
Located just north of the old town on the famous Odeonsplatz, Schumann’s bar is a minimalist mix of brushed steel and wood with anglepoise lamps and unfussy furniture.
The bar eschews excessive quantity in favour of quality by concentrating on the classics as part of a concise cocktail list thoughtfully compiled by Schumann who, even now, can be found at the stick.
Campari is conspicuous in the 60-strong drink selection and the chameleon venue, open from breakfast till 3am, boasts an elegant outdoor space on the edges of the Hofgarten, where a classy Munich clientele can enjoy some excellent al fresco drinking and dining.
That Munich now enjoys an array of very accomplished drinking destinations owes much to Schumann’s institution. Its liquid legacy flows through the city’s cocktail culture and this classic bar remains the giant on whose shoulders other Munich bars now stand.
