Kolokol'naya Ulitsa 2, 191025 Saint Petersburg
A small Mexican basement full of mezcal, tacos and hugs is something you least expect to find while ploughing through the picturesque streets of St Petersburg. This place started four years ago as an extravagant idea to open a Latin American bar, at a time when there was officially no mezcal on the Russian market. Fighting through highs and lows, El Copitas became a must-visit bar on every discerning drinker’s guide.
It is hard to tell what makes this experience unique: the mysterious procedure of getting in, the unexpected hip vibe of a local Mexican neighbourhood, a welcoming copita with tequila accompanied by a quick background story of the bar. Within a few moments you find yourself wrapped in a cosy bubble of candlelit space with no wifi and not enough illumination to take pictures, a signature cocktail in one hand and a hearty taco in another.
