Carrer Airbau 162-166, Barcelona, Spain

DRY MARTINI may have dropped 20 places from 14 to 34, but this Mecca of Martini is one of the darlings of The World’s 50 Best Bars. Of the six lists created and voted for globally, Javier de las Muelas’ bar has been in six - making it number five in our all-time achievers list. We have been conducting the list since 2009 but, given that Dry Martini opened in 1978, it’s easy to imagine it would have notched up more than one or two more appearances.

As with many old-timers that manage to stay relevant, a classical approach is key. White-coated gents glide by the mirrored bar, free-pouring gin, like butlers watering the palace’s best hydrangeas.

The walls are lined with wood, interrupted only by the cabinets of bottles. Where there are soft furnishings they are leather and where there is metal it is brass. This is English cocktail bar luxury in the heart of Barcelona.

We’re not sure to what degree the figure is accurate, but Dry Martini is said to have made more than a million glasses of its eponymous cocktail.

It’s unlikely bartenders ever forget the recipe, but they need only glance over their shoulder at the centrepiece inscription. It reads: "½ London dry gin, ½ French vermouth, 1 dash of orange bitters, squeeze of lemon rind. Add a green olive."
