Buck & Breck

Berlin, Germany

Despite its 21st-century bar credentials – nondescript door with blinking ‘Closed’ sign, a sleek, Swiss-designed central bar seating just 14 guests – Buck and Breck doesn’t accept credit cards and mobile phones are banned. The low-lit space, with its matt-black walls and quirky objects d’art (including a gold chainsaw hovering above a tureen of champagne and a glittering, glass-encased snakeskin), is owned by legendary mixologist Gonçalo de Sousa Monteiro, who favours strong, icy pours. Witness the ‘Gimlet Twist’ – a ratio-perfect concoction of gin, lime and woodruff cordial. Getting in can be hard; leaving, equally so.
