Though Attaboy owners Michael McIlroy and Sam Ross (with Dan Greenbaum) have found fresh renown in the city through the far more casual Brooklyn spot Diamond Reef, their Lower East Side speakeasy still commands a waiting list. The space, of course, was once Milk & Honey, the legendary Sasha Petraske bar that’s often credited with kick-starting the new cocktail era.
While it’s become a bit more relaxed, there is still a sense when you’re at its bar or in its booths that you’re having an important experience – and that the drink you’ll be served will be among the best you’ve ever been presented. Famously, there is no menu. However, you can trust that your bartender will ask the right questions in order to bring you something utterly unexpected but right on the money. That kind of service is how Attaboy has become, in a short time, the bar version of a classic, must-visit restaurant in a city overrun with openings.
