Union Trading Company

Helmed by Texan cocktail king Yao Lu with a food menu designed by the late chef Austin Hu, Shanghai stalwart Union Trading Company brings a dose of American hospitality to the streets of Xuhui. This pumping neighbourhood bar is the kind of place you can pop in for one, or prop up the long, wooden bar all night. Decor is warm and unfussy, with exposed bricks and photos of its international bar family dotting the walls. The drinks menu changes regularly, but you might catch the Truffle Pandan Gibson with baijiu, gin, pandan, black truffle, thyme cordial, apple vinegar and in-house Chinese herb bitters, or pick something from the bar’s barrel-aged cocktail programme, such as the 1870s Sazerac Batch #9 with cognac, house-made amaro, vanilla and absinthe, aged in French limousine casks in a solera system.
