When Manhattan opened in 2014, it set about the task of conjuring up an image of Golden Age of cocktails and combining it with a service ethos that puts the guest experience first. Having won The Best Bar in Asia title on two occasions in 2017 and 2018, then followed up with the Legend of the List Award in 2019 and the Michter’s Art of Hospitality Award in 2020, it continues to mark itself as one of the finest hostelries in the continent.
Hued with warm tones, the bar’s grand lounge melds Old World glamour with luxe contemporary comfort via velvet armchairs, rich drapery and mahogany tables. It’s a fitting backdrop to sample over 150 rare American whiskies, or a solera-aged Negroni produced at the bar’s onsite rickhouse, which is the first for any hotel in the world. Bar manager Rusty Cerven joined Manhattan in late 2020 and has made his mark on the menu, with some unique barrel-aged cocktails that speak to his flavour-forward bartending style. The bar’s heavily researched cocktail list is currently entitled New York Personified and showcases a series of drinks that take their cues from Big Apple luminaries, past and present. The Andy Warhol-inspired Marilyn features bourbon, osmanthus tea, makrut lime and pomegranate cordial, java apple and ginger; while the Cigarette Break, inspired by the late Anthony Bourdain, contains hazelnut and espresso liqueur, toasted coconut, whisky, lemon and egg white. The bar’s food menu is also one of the finest you’ll find anywhere – absolutely order the hotdog.
