Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award
ketel one sustainable bar award 2018: potato head beach club, bali
A Bali beach bar with a conscience, Potato Head combines tropical sunsets and colourful concoctions with an ethos of sustainability. Under the banner of ‘local spirit, tropical soul’, this is a bar that knows how to marry respect for the environment with delicious liquid creations.
As the first winner of the Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award, Potato Head Beach Club achieved the highest sustainability rating of the bars in Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2018 that took part in the sustainability survey. The rating assesses each bar across a number of pillars including sourcing, supporting local farmers, fair treatment of staff, community engagement, recycling and valuing natural resources.
Potato Head’s cocktails are created with a strong emphasis on local ingredients – think fresh mango, pineapple, coconut or jackfruit – as well as traditional Balinese spirits, such as the rice-distilled spirit known as arak. The signature Kookaburra includes lemongrass-infused gin, the bar’s own vanilla sugar, mint and citrus, all topped with passion fruit and vanilla foam.
With Tobias Blazques at the helm as bar operations manager, the bar has also tackled the issue of waste head-on, eliminating all plastic straws, coasters and cocktail napkins and taking measures to reduce the amount of paper used. Many drinks are served in reusable coconut shells or wooden cups, which have become another signature of this Bali beach address.
When it comes to the food offering, all seafood and meat at Potato Head Beach Club is sourced from a network of local farmers and fishermen. The bar also works with the Humane Society, an international animal protection organisation, and has recently received its greenhouse gas emission certification.
Sustainability is carried out as social conscience too – Potato Head responded to the recent eruptions of Mount Agung by sending 1,500kg of supplies, water and food to five camps over a three-month period.
The Ketel One Sustainable Bar Award was introduced to Asia’s 50 Best Bars for the first time in 2018. The sustainability rating of each bar is assessed by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) through a system specially adapted from their restaurant rating, which has been used to assess sustainability for 10 years. All bars on the Asia’s 50 Best Bars list are invited to enter the award via self-nomination.
