NoMad Hotel, 10 West 28th Street, New York City, NY 10001-6403
WHAT YOU MIGHT REMEMBER (AND STILL REFER TO) AS THE NOMAD BAR is actually the Elephant Bar. The new Nomad Bar (this one), next door with an entrance of its own, has all the trademarks of what we’ve come to expect of the Nomad experience – elegant décor, clever cocktails, exquisite food and polished service – but with a more casual vibe.
The space, which once housed a cell phone shop, T-shirt shop and massage parlour, is now a gleaming two-level bar. The main floor, where you can crowd around the bar or slide into a leather- backed booth, has a lively downtown pub scene going on, while the upstairs feels more relaxed while letting you peer over the balcony to take in the action below. No matter where you’re sitting or standing, the striking 10ft mirror behind the bar affords you views from every angle, not to mention some serious people watching.
As for those clever cocktails, many of them are shared with the Elephant Bar, but those that are different tend towards the whimsical. Take the popular (and very fun) Drink Explosions, large-format cocktails designed for groups to share, or the brunch cocktails that go well beyond Bloody Marys. Get your caffeine and booze fix in one with the Café Con Leche, which tastes like a Mai Tai with coffee complete with egg white froth.
The dinner menu echoes the Nomad restaurant’s fine dining ethos. You can even sample its famous truffle and foie gras chicken – albeit in potpie form. There are also chic small plates such as ceviche- style bay scallops marinated with yuzu.
Cocktail in hand, with another on the way thanks to your attentive server, you’ll quickly realise that this may be the only bar you want to drink, eat or hang out in from now on.
