113 St Marks Place, New York, US

THIS BIG NEWS from Please Don’t Tell is captain Jim Meehan’s decision to swap New York for Portland. Meehan has been one of the most important figures on the New York bar scene since PDT opened in May 2007. And don’t worry - PDT will live on. Meehan will remain a partner and über-talented Jeff Bell will look after the day-to-day. Meehan told New York’s Eater.com: "Jeff Bell has been with me for four years, one of the best people I’ve worked with in 20 years in the business." High praise.

Last year, we sensed a certain philosophical edge to Meehan’s outlook on PDT and the industry in general. He told us: "The pendulum of popularity is swinging towards larger, better-appointed bars and the modern speakeasy concept is no longer revered."

And looking at the kind of bars on this list this year and the position of speakeasy types, Meehan is either very wise or he has mastered time travel. He also told Eater.com that there will eventually be a bar in Portland, once
he has found his feet.

It will be fascinating to see what kind of place it is but, for now, we celebrate the success of PDT and its ingenious phone booth entry point from the adjoining hotdog shop.
