If it hits high noon in Tequila Town and no one has challenged you to a gun duel or a day in the fields digging up agave, then chances are you're looking for some respite from the sun and a decent drink. La Capilla offers both and more.
Tequila Town is the beating heart of Jalisco, and La Capilla is its imbibing institution, a universal favourite among travelling booze enthusiasts and integral to any visit to the region. It's a lively lime chunk of marvellous Mexico, with a ramshackle appearance that belies its comfortable ambience and a splendid selection of tequilas that quench the thirst of the local tequila farmers, owners and distillers who frequent it.
But its most notable feature is the exemplary service. Don Javier Delgado Corona is the man serving the drinks, a bartending legend who is now in his 80s. Don Javier is known around the world for his impeccable people skills and his effortless ability to make you feel at home.
As well as delivering a lesson in how to host, Don Javier also has a classic cocktail to his name in the Batanga and, once you've sampled a few tequilas, you need to try one.
His drinks are the perfect accompaniment to the surroundings, usually stirred with whatever cutlery is to hand, and the legendary Batanga is brilliantly basic in its composition, coming complete with a Coca-Cola top poured from the bottle.
