Eau de Vie
229 Darlinghurst road, Sydney, Australia
DARLINGHURST IS A VERY COOL INNER CITY suburb and Eau de Vie, set up in 2010, is a very cool bar. Since then it has appeared on this list in 2011, 2012, 2013 and now 2014.
So many places have opened and closed or failed to make it on to the list for a second time, but Eau de Vie remains testament to getting it right from the start.
The speakeasy-style joint is hidden at the back of the Kirketon hotel and the aim of the game is time travel. Bear with us.
The vibe and the drinks at Eau de Vie point to a different era (lots of 1920s-1930s tipples) and the folk behind the stick want you to feel like you’ve gone back in time. A sort of Narnia for bon vivants, if you like. And we do like.
Lounge around in your fur coat with a Honey Butter Old Fashioned - butter fat-washed bourbon, honey syrup and Xocolatl Mole bitters stirred down and served on a large chunk of hand-cut ice. "Silky and textural", they say.
But don’t think it’s all about sepia-toned posers - there’s Whisky Wednesday for discounted drams and some playful tiki drinks served from tiki mugs that would make your mother-in- law seem attractive. And of course, you can learn how to mix like an Eau de Vie pro at one of its masterclasses.
So, yeah, not surprising to see this little gem back for a fourth year - it’s got it all.
