THERE’S A BRUNCH COCKTAILS MENU. If that doesn’t excite you, dear drinks trade professional, we don’t know what will. As well as the usual Bloody Mary line-up, there’s a range of bracers and pick-ups, including the namesake Clover Club.
The menu advises: "When you stagger out of bed, groggy, grouchy and cross- tempered, we recommend one of these fog cutters to remedy your hangover..." The Clover Club cocktail features gin, dry vermouth, lemon juice, raspberry syrup and egg white.
The history of the original Clover Club is one we are sure you have heard, but if not, it goes a little something like this: From 1882 to the 1920s, a select group of Philadelphia journalists met once a month at the Bellevue Hotel to eat and drink and talk.
The group’s motto went like this: "Who enters here leaves care behind, leaves sorrow behind, leaves petty envies and jealousies behind."
That was probably true of the journos at the time but their guests, often celebrities, were said to be the subjects of much heckling. If only we could do that now...
Today, the look and feel of the place is timeless and we think it is that, along with tireless attention to hospitality, that keeps Clover Club on the list.
