28 Hongkong Street, Singapore

NO DOUBT IT’S PARTY TIME at 28 Hongkong Street as it celebrates another year at number 10 - and the bar is also set to turn three years old on Halloween. Two fairly good reasons to pop a few corks, sure, but there’s even bigger news - David Cordoba, currently global ambassador for Bacardi, has joined 28HKS’s sister company, Proof & Company Spirits.

He starts in November as portfolio director and will be bartender in residence at 28HKS, meaning he’ll be there at least one night per week. So, do your homework before you book your plane tickets, people. Or just turn up - it’s not like this place is short on talent.

Cordoba will be joined by Bacardi ambassador Arijit Bose, who has signed to become head bartender. The pair will work with Michael Callahan, 2011 US Bartenders’ Guild Cocktail World Cup winner, who is among the founders.

The bar opened in answer to New York’s burgeoning scene, which kick-started the bar and cocktail revolution we have been enjoying.

General manager Joe Alessandroni says the idea was to bring that special brand of neighbourhood cocktail-cool to Singapore and share with the locals the kind of bars they had experienced on their travels. And if that’s not enough big names for one bar, add Zdenek Kastanek to the equation, another bartender in residence. Oh, and Peter Chua, one of the final six at World Class this year.

Next time you’re there, also have a look for green-fingered ‘tenders. Fresh ingredients are so important at 28HKS that many are grown up on the rooftop - including pomegranates and mandarin oranges, apparently. So when it comes to the drinks, expect clean, fresh, flavour-focused cocktails. If the tipples sound serious, fear not because this place knows how to party.

From the outside, you won’t know this is a bar but from the inside, you won’t be in any doubt.
